Wannous from Syria, to Germany and back to Iraq

Interest in the work of Syrian playright Saadallah Wannous has been gaining more and more interest in the recent years. A german production of the play that took place in November of 2012 in TAK (TAK Theater Aufbau Kreuzberg) in Berlin, was recently in Iraq’s Kurdish parts. The play, an adaptation of Wannous’ Rituals for a metamorphosis was well received by the press.

German director Moritz Pankok told in an interview to TAZ magazine: “”We do not want to only tell an Arab story,” while it does on the one hand give its performing rights to a contemporary Arabic play, the issues contained therein are universal: “I believe that what is spoken here is very much about self realisation and one’s own freedom. That concerns us all..”
