The writer Khaled Khalifa at the Milanesiana with, In praise of hatred, explains why Syria will not end like Libya

“The regime kills protesters in cold blood and is not ready to compromise. But there it is, an entire society that has distanced itself from a past of repression and corruption to look to the future.”
Khaled Khalifa, 47, is a well-known Syrian writer living in Damascus, victim of censorship. Today, he testifies of the violence of the government in an effort to curb the insurgency in the country (1,300 civilians killed by March according to local human rights groups). And about the will of Assad, in this case Hafiz, the father of President Bashar, the author speaks, in his “In praise of hatred”, of the anti-Islamic repression in the ’80s, culminating in the massacre of Hama. “But at the time the regime was fighting against a minority. Today, it fights against a whole people ”
Assad does not seem to want to give up.
“The regime is still the ’80s, the Cold War, and treats us like a herd of sheep who do not deserve to make demands of freedom. The president, whom all called ‘young’, has chosen to refer to that past, and lost credit. ”
What is the goal of Assad?
“The regime wants to drag the country towards the Libyan model, while the people wants a revolution inspired by the Egyptians”
How much longer can Syrians resist?
“Long. The obtuseness of the regime is opposed by intelligent youth who are ready for anything”
How do they do it?
“With mobile phones. The power that controls everything is disarmed in the face of photographs taken by activists with trembling hands that show the world its atrocities. The power is helpless in front of the faith of protesters in the possibility of finally winning their rights ”
What do you ask from the West? What can it do?
“We call for support but not interference. Our country has fought for centuries, and this time we want to decide for ourselves, in complete autonomy”

Khaled Khalifa, 47 anni, è un noto scrittore siriano residente a Damasco. Già vittima della censura, oggi è testimone delle violenze del governo per frenare la rivolta nel Paese (1.300 civil uccisi da marso secondo i gruppi locali per i diritti umani). Assad non sembra voler cedere.
“Il régime è fermo agli anni ’80, alla guerra fredda, e ci tratta come un branco di pecore che non meritano di avanzare richieste di libertà. Anche il presidente, che tutti definivano ‘giovane’, ha scelto di rifarsi a quel passato, e ha perso credito”.
Qual è l’obiettivo di Assad?
“Il régime vuole trascinare il Paese verso il modello libico, mentre il popolo vuole una rivoluzione ispirata a quello egiziano”
Quanto ancora possono resistere, is siriani?
“Molto. All’ottusità del regime si oppongono giovani intelligenti e pronti a tutto”
Come fanno?
“Con il cellulare. Il potere, che controlla ogni cosa, è disarmato di fronte alle fotografie scattate dagli attivisti con le mani tremanti che mostrano al mondo le sue atrocità. Il potere è inerme di fronte alla fede dei manifestanti nella possibilità di conquistare finalmente i loro diritti”
All’Occidente che cosa chiedete? Che cosa può fare?
“Chiediamo sostegno, ma non ingerenza. Il nostro Paese è conteso da secoli, e questa volta vogliamo decidere noi, in totale autonomia”
